Catalog Description
The objective of this course is to gain an understanding of various issues in designing an optical network. Topics include SONET/SDH, wavelength division multiplexing, framing techniques, traffic grooming, multiple access protocols, virtual topology design, routing and wavelength assignment, protection and restoration, and optical packet switching.

Specific Goals for the Course
By the end of this course student shall be able to:
Demonstrate understanding of the basics of data communications such as data transmission, data encoding, interface, multiplexing. (Student outcomes: 1, 2)
Understand the properties of light and the principle of wave-guiding. (Student outcomes: 1, 2).
Differentiate between the different types of optical fiber cables. (Student outcomes: 2)
Understand the basic concepts of SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) and SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy). (Student outcomes: 2).
Compare and contrast the optical model with the electrical model in Ethernet, IP and MPLS networks. (Student outcomes: 2)
Demonstrate understanding of the Optical Data Center Interconnect (DCI) Solutions. (Student outcomes: 2)
Identify different components and topologies of Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON). (Student outcomes: 1, 2)
Demonstrate understanding of basic concepts of Wavelength Division Network WDM. (Student outcomes: 1, 2)
